Om Mee Ai obtained a Master of Fine Art (Painting), The Open University, UK (2006) after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Art, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University (2003) and a Diploma in Fine Art (Painting), LASALLE College of the Arts (2002). Since then she has participated in several group and solo exhibitions and been awarded several recognitions. Om has won the prestigious UOB Painting of the Year Competition three times in the Abstract Medium category in 2003, and consecutively in 2006 and 2007.
With the grid as an underlying structure, Om Mee’s canvas is in a mixture of multiple translucent layers of colour painted using a complex and meticulous process of repetitive "taping, layering, and wiping". The result is a pure abstract painting in a form of post-geometrical modernism.
What seems at first glance to be quiet simplicity unravels, on deeper contemplation, highly detailed and complex systems at work. Om sees geometric abstraction as a visual language that reveals and conceals at the same time. She encourages viewers to study the intricacies of her artworks through an intense meditative experience.
Her artworks are held in important collections such as the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), SAM Art Bank Collection, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Manpower, United Overseas Bank, Philip Morris Singapore, European Financial Group, INSEAD Business School (Asia Campus), and Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Singapore and Jakarta, Indonesia.
“I believe that the way we perceive the artwork depends on the interaction between our inner experiences and external physical factors like light, reflection, and time. Artwork becomes meaningful only when one connects emotionally with it.”
- Om Mee Ai, 2010
