Gallery Barry Keldoulis presents Ignition, an exhibition by Sean Cordeiro & Claire Healy. The new body of work focuses on the aesthetics of fossil fuel consumption with a series of tapestries depicting disasters that have manifested from the use of petroleum products and sculptural wall works that conflate the unique geometry of snowflakes with the huge variety in motor vehicle design. Cross-stitching, a time intensive process, is used to create pictures of a number of historically significant yet fleeting moments; iconic images imprinted on our collective psyche, and re-enforced nightly on the television news. We live in an age that is literally fuelled by the remains of a bygone era: oil. We are the inheritors of a power that has taken millions of years to produce, but so much of which can evaporate in an explosion that lasts mere seconds. A power source that we will have the pleasure of exhausting within just a few generations.
