Yue Minjun is not only unquestionably one of the most recognized and influential Chinese contemporary artists but considered among the leading artists in the international scene today. Born in 1962 in the Northeast of China, Yue Minjun moved to Beijing in 1989 after graduating from the painting department of Hebei Normal University. His iconic self portraits with their almost painfully exaggerated grins have become the consummate symbol of the “cynical realist” style that grew out of the mounting political pressures and social contradictions in the post–Tienanmen period of the early to mid-1990s.
Yue Minjun, produced a series of eight new and striking images, titled the “Grassland Series” – four images have been created as screen prints with Pace Print’s master printers at Wantanabe Studios and four as multiple-block wood cut prints produced at Yue Minjun’s studio in Beijing. Each is singular in their detail and rendered in highly contrasting shades of grey with very subtle casts of muted color - a notable departure from the artist’s usual palette.
Each print has been produced in an edition of eighty signed and numbered by Yue Minjun. These editions are available individually or in limited sets.
