In Another Land (Pick 'n' Mix Version) by Laurence Aberhart
by Darren Knight Gallery
Location: Darren Knight Gallery
Date: 3 May - 31 May 2014

This exhibition showcases a diverse selection of images from Aberhart’s practice, spanning the breadth and depth of his 40-year career. It combines images from his ongoing investigation of New Zealand with images from his travels throughout Australia, North America and Antarctica. Works such as Building, Syracuse, New York, 30 August 2010 and Flat Iron building, Rochester, New York, 15 August 2010 were taken during the artist’s Fulbright Research Grant, which enabled him to travel the northeast of the United States of America to observe the impact of recent economic decline on the people and landmarks of the region. These contemporary American images are complemented by photographs such as Utica, Mississippi, 27 September 1988 and Dixiana Motel, Vicksburg, Mississippi, 28 September 1988, taken on a tour of the southern states of the USA over 25 years ago but never before exhibited.

Aberhart’s recent travels to Australia and Antarctica are represented in this exhibition by works such as Interior, Nimbin Museum, Nimbin, NSW, 17 March 2013 and Interior, Shackleton's Hut, Cape Royds, Ross Island, Antarctica, 1 December 2010. Interior spaces have been a significant part of Aberhart’s photographic practice since the 1970s and many of the spaces he captures - museums, shops, churches, masonic lodges and community halls - are moving towards obsolescence. By recording these underused and out-dated spaces, Aberhart’s work can be viewed as both an act of preservation and a witness to the passage of time. In Interior, St Nicholas' Russian Orthodox Church, South Bethlehem, Pa., 9 October 2010 a deconsecreated church has become someone’s living room, the church pews moved aside to make room for books and furniture. Similarly, Interior #3, Lodge Arrow Kilwinning #86, Arrowtown, Central Otago, 1 November 2012 depicts the interior of a freemasons’ lodge, seemingly without contemporary function, other than as a museum display of itself .

Laurence Aberhart has exhibited regularly since the late 1970s. His work was the subject of a major New Zealand touring retrospective Aberhart, between 2007 and 2009. A comprehensive monograph was published by Victoria University Press to accompany this exhibition.

ANZAC, currently on exhibition at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, New Zealand and touring afterwards, brings together Aberhart’s images of ‘Digger’ memorials from Australia and New Zealand photographed over a 35 year period. This touring exhibition is accompanied by the book ANZAC: Photographs by Laurence Aberhart recently published by Victoria University Press.

Other recent solo exhibitions include Laurence Aberhart: The other side, Lismore Regional Gallery, Lismore, Australia (2013). Forthcoming group exhibitions include Conflict: Contemporary responses to war, UQ Art Museum, Queensland and Concrete, MUMA, Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne (both 2014). Other recent group exhibitions include South by Southeast, Eastern Southland Gallery, Gore, New Zealand, and South of No North – Laurence Aberhart, William Eggleston, Noel McKenna, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney and City Gallery Wellington (both 2013).

In 2013, Aberhart was the recipient of The Arts Foundation’s New Zealand Laureate Award which recognises outstanding achievement and excellence in artistic practice. His work is held in the collection of all major museums in New Zealand, the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Queensland Art Gallery/GOMA, Brisbane, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, and Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, Amsterdam.
