Cherry Blossom is a large-scale video work (over 5 hours), described by the artist as an opera with no acts, no beginning and no end. The story takes place at three locations in Bangkok, following a period of transition in the life of a young girl, Cherry Blossom, and the people she meets in these three places. The video work includes spoken and sung voice with musical accompaniment – the musical instruments used are all found objects, transformed objects and instrument-effigies, specific to the three locations depicted in the story. The narrative itself is a treatise on youth, beauty, sexuality and perversion, and extends to the contemporary topics of migration (both local and foreign) and social inequalities. Additionally, a fictional mythology is interwoven into the story’s narratives, objects, costumes and musical instruments, created from the symbols and shapes at play in Thailand’s major industries and commodities. The video work is presented in context with production and behind-the-scenes stills, post-performance objects and visual, sculptural and statistical imagery that has contributed to the development and realization of the work as a whole. Screenings of key arias will be shown as part of the exhibition.
