The acceleration of social changes in China and the extension of mass communication media in the early 1990s stimulated the exploration of photography as a means of self-expression. Liu Zheng, born in 1969, Heibei province, was among the first wave of avant-garde photographers of the 1990s in China. the Chinese series portrays a society welting with the contradictions between traditional culture and modernization. the series presents a broad cross section of society. Zheng's photographs betray a dark vision, albeit one that is laced with offsetting humor. Drawing on his background, Zheng utilizes photography as a tool for constructing false reality. The lighting and poses in these square format photographs all appear candid.
