Artist(s): Otagaki RENGETSU
Date: 25 Jun - 20 Jul 2011
From June 25th to July 20th Ray Hughes Gallery is excited to exhibit a selection of ceramics and scrolls by the 19th Century Buddhist nun, poet, calligrapher, potter and painter, Otagaki Rengetsu (Lotus Moon). The ceramics instilled with the artist’s fingerprints hold such a delicacy it creates an intimacy between Rengetsu and oneself. Both the ceramics and scrolls are inscribed with the flowing Kanji script of her poetry.
After the National Gallery of Australia’s exhibition and publication of Rengetsu’s work Ray was inspired to promptly fly to Switzerland to meet with one of the few dealers of Otagaki Rengetsu’s work. We are now lucky enough to share the intimate experience of one of Japan’s most celebrated poets and ceramists.
