A Symptom of Nature
by Republikha Art Gallery
Location: Republikha Art Gallery
Artist(s): Paul MONDOK
Date: 10 Dec 2011 - 7 Jan 2012

Paul Mondok is mounting his first solo exhibition that will open 6pm on Saturday, 10 December 2011. His practice relates to a certain site-specifity, and his works take the form of subtle anomalies to the space where they are situated, providing an ambiguous but potent sense of anticipation.

A Symptom of Nature contains Paul's enduring deadpan wit as he operates on the structure of peripheral visions, mirages and looking through a cloud of mystery. The exhibition investigates the trafficking between object and place. His sculptural assemblages evolved from personal resonance to “burrows” or elements that allude to them. His encrypted, intuitive configuration of things is not made in response to any topical reality. Instead, Paul Mondok manages to negotiate a terrain of unknowable vastness that is contained within the corners and hollow spaces of his works for A Symptom of Nature. The exhibition will run until Saturday, 7 January 2012.

Paul Mondok (b. 1978) earned a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines Diliman. He has been exhibiting since 1998 in alternative art spaces and exhibitions that ponder contemporary art practice and formats. Selected shows include “The Topology of Signs” (Cultural Center of the Philippines, 1999), “Shoot Me: Photography Now” (Mo_Space, 2007) and “Room 307: Inkling, Gut Feel and Hunch” (National Museum, 2008). His works have also been featured in venues such as Osage Kwun Tong, Hong Kong and The Philippine Center, New York.
