Drama III (2008) by LI Wei Guang
180 × 210 cm
Oil on canvas

My original intention is to create a series of slowly disappearing matters, to place the characters and things into a large background of the times, and to reflect on the destiny of traditional culture in a developing society. There is a lot of essence in the traditional culture, such as drama, arts and crafts, construction, some of which, with the development of the society, will gradually disappear. Nowadays many children don’t know Cantonese opera, Cantonese embroidery, etc. Although the artists can use their own methods to record some of the details, but too much has been slowly disappearing. As my personal strength is limited, I hope to evoke the common concern of people through my creation.

In this series of creation, the characters in the drama are just a part of the expression, whereas on the pictures, I use the hue of yellow to make a quiet atmosphere and expose the traces which belong to the past, sending people’s mind back to the fading years, solidifying a culture and an era in the pictures.
