Still Life
by Doosan Gallery New York
Location: Doosan Gallery New York
Artist(s): Heeseung CHUNG
Date: 6 Sep - 6 Oct 2012

DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Still Life, the solo exhibition of Heeseung Chung, from September 6 to October 6, 2012. The exhibition accompanies Chung's significant works from her recent series of photographs.

The point of departure in Chung's works often appear in her concerns of presenting 'latent state of things,' the state of certain mood, feeling or expression, which may be aroused from the relationship of internal and external factors in the photographed subject. This principle of latency begins from her early series, Persona, which implies the issue on how to portray the inner and outer ego of an individual through the camera, and Reading, which focused on the internal variations that occur within an actor as he reads the script.

Still Life, takes a step further by depicting and observing object, as opposed to figure. Thus, Chung made the object to find a continuation than fixation, while 'Still' implies aspiration on 'duration' which releases from 'stillness' as a general meaning of photography. In this exhibition, Chung's works argue with the tradition of photography as capturing or depicting 'frozen moment,' yet evoke a sense of psychological tension between the time and space in which continuity has been preserved.

Heeseung Chung (b. 1974) has received her B.F.A. in Painting from Hongik University in Seoul, Korea and a B.A. and a M.A. in Photography from London College of Communication in London, U.K. She has had solo exhibitions at DOOSAN Gallery Seoul (2011,Seoul, Korea) and Gallery Wa (2008, Seoul, Korea). Her works has also been included in group exhibitions at SongEun Art Space (2012, Seoul, Korea), South Hill Park (2010, Bracknell, U.K), Espacio Menosuno (2010, Madrid, Spain), National museum of Singapore (2010, Singapore), Arario Gallery (2010, Cheonan, Korea), Barge House (2008, London, U.K), and London Olympia Conference Centre (2007, London, U.K).
