HappyLand
by Thavibu Gallery
Location: Thavibu Gallery
Artist(s): Thaweesak SRITHONGDEE
Date: 19 Sep - 11 Oct 2009

Thavibu Gallery is pleased to present the art exhibition HappyLand with new works by Thaweesak Srithongdee on 19 September - 11 October.  The exhibition will feature a series of paintings on canvas as well as a video installation.

The artist says: “HappyLand is about the disapproval and offensiveness that dwells quietly inside of me.  It is about the need for self-expression.  It is also about freedom from society’s rules and the status quo of the real world we live in.  It questions our existence and the space we occupy.  That very space in which we express our inner self freely ----- does it truly exist?  This is a story that attempts to reflect on the meaning of space and human beings.  Thirty-nine years seems a long time, but I somehow feel my youth has just brushed past me like a stranger in the crowd.  My life, my days still move on slowly...slowly...slowly..... These days, I constantly dream of a distant place....a place I long to be, a place that envelopes me while I happily absorb the wide open space that surrounds me."

Thaweesak Srithongdee is 39 years old and one of Thailand’s most internationally recognized artists.  He is well known as a painter and illustrator, and has recently also ventured into video and producing sculptures.  He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Thailand and abroad.  Including a residency at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan in 2005 and the Fukuoka Triennale.  He also took part in the International Film Festival in Rotterdam in 2008 and in the Jakarta Biennale in 2009.  His paintings are in the collections of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and the Singapore Art Museum, and his works are regularly sold at international auctions.
