Back to Back, with Nedko Solakov
by Lombard Freid Gallery
Location: Lombard Fried Gallery, New York
Artist(s): Dan PERJOVSCHI
Date: 15 Jan - 14 Feb 2015

Lombard Freid is pleased to present Back to Back, a seminal collaborative work from 2006 between Dan Perjovschi and Nedko Solakov. The eponymous installation comprises an immersive wood sculpture covered in the artists’ ink drawings, ironic observations of reality (Perjovschi) versus fantasy and absurdity (Solakov).

Additionally, Perjovschi has created a new series of drawings, shown as a slideshow, of recent events in the global community (2014-early 2015). These include the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, the crisis in Crimea, the controversy surrounding the World Cup in Brazil, the political protests in Hong Kong, the racial tension in the U.S., and the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris.

Dan Perjovschi is best known for his mural scale wall drawings and intimate postcards inspired by current events, using his characteristic line to create a commentary on diverse social and political contexts around the world. Taking inspiration and material from local popular media, he touches upon the most trying and significant issues that mark our time – economic instability, religious fanaticism, terrorism, nationalism, and consumerism. Beyond politics, Perjovschi is never shy to expose the inner workings of the international art world within its own system replete with contradictions, while illuminating the role of the artist in society. Recent exhibitions include Between Lines, Kunstraum Stein, Krems; Perjovschi, Reykjavik Museum of Art; A Retrospective, Center for Contemporary Culture, Tours; The News After the News, Total Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; IntenseProximity: Art as Network, La Triennale Paris, Palais de Tokyo. Perjovschi lives and works in Bucharest, Romania. Nedko Solakov has exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States. His recent exhibitions include solo shows at Kunstwerke, Berlin, Germany; S.M.A.K. Ghent, Belgium; and the Kunstverein Amsterdam, The Netherlands. His work has been featured in the Venice, Istanbul, São Paulo, Lyon and Gwangju Biennials. He lives and works in Sofia, Bulgaria.
