Scale has played an important part in Art History and the sense of the monumental in Art whether epic mural or ceiling painting, colossal canvases or public sculpture reflects the marvelous, awe inspiring qualities of creativity to represent human experience. Such work through its very physicality prompts powerful statements and critique about systems of control, dominance, and authority often within the context of religion, spirituality, government and people. XXL takes as its starting point the ability of grand narrative and tableau painting to observe, represent and interrogate the state of the nation. Anticipating various approaches that weave personal and public critique, humour, idealism, warning, and observation on ideas of nationhood, community and the realities of politics, the exhibition aims to present a visual conversation on the contemporary condition of Indonesia today.
