by Johyun Gallery
Location: Johyun Gallery Busan
Artist(s): So Yeun LEE
Date: 11 Apr - 11 May 2014

The exhibition title directly transcribes the address of Berliner Dom, which takes a significant part in the concept of the exhibition. It is intended to maintain a disengaged attitude, disinclined to any emotional states. It portrays a specific place based on the artist's personal experience, and for the general audience, it also represents a common – anonymous – place anyone can encounter within the boundaries of the realm of their lives.

The works have been produced post the artist's residency in Berlin, which lasted for six months from the winter of 2013 through the early summer. The temporal duration of six months involves an ambiguous state that is neither settling down nor traveling. This ambiguity hides away the comfort that can be found in time. Like swimming in a void space, the artist could not move forward but could only watch the time pass as if one was in a nightmare, wallowing in thoughts. Her six months disintegrated in avoid space and when she stepped on a land of time again, only the abstract experiences were left, scattered here and there like dust.

The works showcased in the exhibition are directly and indirectly related to the artist's life in Berlin and after. Seeing life itself as a series of physical and psychological spatial relocations, the significance of new places lie in providing one a chance to witness his or her new selves constantly emerging from the process of self-reflection. However, it also makes one question the matter of identity and the existence of identity as an individual self.

Like an electroencephalography sensor, the artist records every bit perceived through her sensory organs as she travels. Among the recorded information, the ones with greater wavelengths draw stronger curves and those collected records are reconstructed on canvases. Rather than simply appreciating the works through an act of looking, the viewers will be able to ruminate their lives through synchronizing the images of themselves and associating their own emotions with the works, which is part of the exhibition's intent.
