Mother Nature's Beauty in 3D on Leather
by Annexe Gallery
Location: Annexe Gallery
Artist(s): Wendy TANG
Date: 2 Jun - 12 Jun 2011

Renowned leather artisan Wendy Tang discovered her calling in life when she successfully merged the knowledge, skills and discipline of silver-smithing, dress designing, art painting and leather crafting to form her unique style of creative three dimensional leather work.

Wendy Tang likes capturing Mother Nature on leather. Using special carving and stamping tools, she creates the three dimensional look on all her leather art pieces.

She noticed that people tend to be drawn into the three dimensional nature of her leather art pieces. They are so fascinated with the depth of the different layers that are intricately carved on the leather piece. Her work is appreciated not just by sight alone but also by touch.

She says: “Leather is an organic compound and you don't easily get allergic reactions that synthetic materials offer. Leather is very durable and tough, and with a bit of maintenance using special oils and waxes it has a very long lifespan. The natural and luxurious look of leather is compatible with many kinds of materials used in home decor designs.

“An important point to note is that leather is also soft and flexible. It can be shaped. And it allows her the opportunity to work on creating different depths and layers. She uses a special set of tools to cut intricate lines into the leather first and then work on creating the depth and the different layers with special stamping tools. Almost any artwork can be converted into 3-Dimensional art on leather.”

As a participant of Malaysia's My Second Home program, Wendy Tang, from Taiwan, now resides in Shah Alam, Selangor. Because her artistic work is appreciated in the Malaysian market, she decides to offer and share her expertise in fine leather art and craft work to the Malaysian art community, from her residence.

Her friends and customers constantly encourage her to showcase her work to the Malaysian public so more people can see and appreciate her fine art pieces. As a result of the support and encouragements Wendy Tang decides to showcase her work at The Annexe Gallery in the Central Market Kuala Lumpur.

An inspiring collection of Wendy Tang's work is on display at her solo exhibition titled "Mother Nature's Beauty Captured in 3-D on Leather" at The Annexe Gallery. She will also be demonstrating her leather carving skills on the first day of the exhibition (2nd June 2011).
