A Photography Collection
by Silverlens Gallery
Location: Silverlens Gallery
Date: 23 Nov - 23 Dec 2011

In Silverlens, A Photography Collection, from a private collection based in Manila, this survey includes a wide range of photographic media, from alternative process cyanotypes to silver gelatin photographs to color lithographs and digital chromogenic prints. The collection, started in 2007, is a work in progress. Represented are Poklong Anading, Kawayan de Guia, Charles Harbutt, Isa Lorenzo, Wawi Navarroza, Neal Oshima, Gina Osterloh, Robert Rauschenberg, Rachel Rillo, Keisuke Shirota, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Noelle Tan, Paulo Ventura, Andy Warhol, MM Yu and Nona Garcia.

At SLab and 20Square, Mia Herbosa gifts us this holiday season with Art Matters. A show of ten drawings and twenty-four new paintings, mostly oils on panel, of still-life tableaux and portraits that she has become known for. A deeply introspective artist, Herbosa writes, “art shows me how the roller coaster ride of my daily experience is not necessarily the dictator of my days”.

An active career spanning the most of sixteen years, there are paintings nodding to older paintings, such as Sunflowers for Mr. Wilson. The older Mr. Wilson, a smallish portrait in a dark greens done in 1996, is on show. Beside it, a recent painting of a table top with Mr. Wilson making an appearance in the painting with mangoes, rambutan, a pair of sunflowers in an antique brown glazed jar from the southern Philippines. A painting of coming home by the artist, who spent many years in New York City where she schooled at the Art Students League, and where she will be returning to next year. There are also paintings of everyday objects from Herbosa’s surroundings, their titles revealing the artist’s pursuit of intangible bliss: Root Chakra Chair and The Wish Fulfilling Tree (Abundance).

There will be two related gallery events to the Silverlens Galleries year-ender shows. There will be a talk right before the opening on November 23, from 4-6 pm on Collecting Photography (by Isa Lorenzo) and Photography Conservation (by Rachel Rillo). On November 26, Saturday, from 3:30-5 pm will be an Artist Talk by Mia Herbosa. Mia Herbosa's Art Matters is in collaboration with L'arc en Ciel. Both gallery events are free of charge, but we encourage you to RSVP for seat availability.
