Assemblage: Project 3 is Julius Clar's third installment of shadow boxes at 20SQUARE. This time, he calls our attention to the spatial weight of objects and the assertions of the vacancies that surround them.
The artist presents an assortment of curious, delicate, inventive, but also ordinary items. Among them are his photographs, magazine cutouts, wooden blocks and figures, a 12-inch ruler, a playing card… the list goes on. Conceptually handpicked but without authentic histories, the objects are assembled to resist narrative and lead us to question what these collections are worth and why.
Clar shows an accumulation of images that are begging for interpretation. Fifteen shadow boxes inviting us to look and piece together what is not displayed, “to see what is not there …to look for the vacant parts, put them back into the assemblage piece and then reconsider the new whole.”
A celebration of things that draw the imagination, these shadow boxes become literal "show cases" to puzzle and delight.
Assemblage: Project 3 opens on June 1, 2011 simultaneously with Wet by Neal Oshima at Silverlens, and Postlocal 2011 curated by Isa Lorenzo and featuring Gaston Damag, Pow Martinez, and Lynyrd Paras at SLab. The three shows will run until June 25, 2011.
