David Thomson is the 2010 winner of both the Qantas Foundation Encouragement of Australian Contemporary Art Award and the Artflight Grant from the Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts. His show 'Models' in the Project Space is about giving a seriously spooky sense of humour to mundane daily objects often already imbued with their own sense of kitsch; One example is a small dog figurine of ghastly ceramic and chipped paintwork meticulously wrapped in string as if kidnapped from a home out the back of Bourke and recontextualised/imprisoned in a new strange urban theatre of the uncanny. Yet his beady weird eyes are so captivatingly gleeful its just plain eerie.
Another work sexualises a plinth with pantyhose worn around its figurative head in an ouvre of the bizarre we have come to associate with Dada but also activating the strange sexual labyrinths of the human mind evoking Bataillian awkwardness of pubescent sexuality and the objectification of desire.
