In 2013, McWilliams was invited to the small hilltown of Rivodutri outside of Rome, to make a site- specific work. He quickly settled on the town church and it's 14th century fresco, which had only recently been rediscovered after an earthquake had disturbed the 19th century interiors. McWilliams' Reliefs series presents a personal archeology of this encounter in the form of rubbings and contour impressions of Rivodutri's frescos. The Relief series consists of coloured Conte crayon rubbings on paper, while the Relief (uncoloured) series is the simple result of pressing sheets of paper against the cracked and irregular edges of fresco walls following it's contour only to reveal dirt and shadow.
