Date: 2 Nov - 20 Nov 2011

Chalk Horse is proud to exhibit the work of three contemporary artists from New Zealand: Roger Boyce, Robert Hood and James Oram. These artists all embody a contemporary installation practice that interrogates the place of art in the society. There is playful humour and satirical edge to the works. In Boyce's 'Nature Morte' the artist's studio is conflated with a drug laboratory; the alchemy of paint is connected to the chemistry of transgressive drug manufacture. Weren't the first artistic studios also alchemical studios?

Robert Hood's work apes Walter de Maria's Broken Kilometre, also now set up in the de Maria's New York studio. Hood's installations are in fact broken road markers. The high seriousness of minimalism is countered in a neo-minimalist inversion.

James Oram, who has already shown at GOMA, turns the world into his studio; his work is based on small personal victories. It is an experimental art that finds little political and social insurrections through mundane materials or actions.
