Organised by AFA Beijing, Ebony & Ivory – An Exhibition by 10 Macau Photographers will open its curtains at 3:00 pm on Saturday 10th April at the AFA Beijing. Curated by Kent Ieong Chi Kin, this exhibition just finished showing in Macau in February, and it showcases black and white photographs by ten Macao artists, namely António Falcão, António Mil-Homens, Carmo Correia, Frank Lei, Ho Ka Cheng,James Chu, Lorence Chan, Peng Yun, Terence Hun and Wong Ho Sang.

Technological innovations have introduced convenience to our lives. The technology of photography can be traced back to Daguerre’s desire to fix the images projected on the camera obscura. Such technology has made great leaps forward over its hundred years of evolution.  These days, people can effortlessly capture all image details. Digital cameras, mobile phones, MP3 players, notebook computers - even eye glasses - are equipped with image-fixing functions. Our era marks the prevalence of images and is a time when people live via images. By means of photography, images are fixed and colours are frozen.  However, can genuine images and their colours reappear in the world of colourful and changeable photographic images? There is, in fact, no way for us to reproduce space-time, to recapture the feelings of past moments, or to revive the colour of the past. This awareness hints that it may be time to return to the world of black and white and discard the distraction of colour. It’s time to look back and explore the fantastic art – the spirit of light.

By displaying 40 photographs by ten Macao artists, Ebony & Ivory – Exhibition by 10 Macau Photographers leads us back to the world of black and white, and enables us to search for the genuine light in the images. Is fixing images what we need today? The spirit of light has faded from our world for an entire era, so what can we lose?
