Active Anesthesia – The Black Echo (2009) by SHIN Il Kim
122 x 366 cm
6 panels, polycarbonate black mirror

Black mirror is commonly described as mirror of soul since its veiled depth stimulates our sense for imagination (scryer uses it to see the visions not only the physical reflection on the surface). I consider it as an emblem of calm water surface, calm enough to see reflection images on it and utilize it for amplifying silent and spiritual tone in my work. In order to visualize my notion of ‘Practical Spirituality’ in artwork, I create waves on this surface by leaving pressed lines using non-working pen
on the black mirror, I made.

Since generating gesture on the surface in active state is my particular approach in these mirror works, I depicted ice skating poses, active dancer’s acting pose getting out of tangled inner parts of human body like blood vain, nerve system, and nymph system as a metaphor of being active against passive condition on black iced surface in the works, Ice Skater in Black Mirror and A Dancer.

In the work Ways from Light, I parsed a word, light, and made blenched out the literal meaning of light, which is actually considered as immaterial but the root of all materials, I believe. The definition of light starts as its definition but ends with the definition of life in dictionary.

In 80 Ways to Describe a Person in Black and 80 Ways to Describe a Circle in Black, I depicted the 80 special characters to describe a Buddha figure. I depicted a normal person sitting and a circle, which represents the universe and a symbol of life, and made them visible by contrast of all the written 80 characters behind of them. I hope the viewers see themselves through this circle and a sitting person.
