Len Lye: Kaleidoscope is a major new exhibition of kinetic works from the ebullient and visionary filmmaker, sculptor, poet, painter and “composer of motion”, Len Lye, one of the most internationally influential and recognised New Zealand artists of the twentieth century.
Inspired by the “muse of motion”, Len Lye (1901–1980) exemplifies an artist who is equally at home in different media. As a young man in Wellington he was one of the first artists in the world to work with movement while the sculpture he made during the 1960s and 1970s in New York is among the most acclaimed kinetic art of any period.
Focusing on his tangibles—Lye's own moniker for his kinetic sculpture—alongside a selection of his abstract films, Len Lye: Kaleidoscope will showcase the depth and variety of form in Lye's exploration of figures of motion. This selection of works capture the energy and essence of the artist's independent and inspired practice.
City Gallery Wellington is proud to present Len Lye: Kaleidoscope in collaboration with the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth and the Len Lye Foundation and the New Zealand Film Archive Ngā Kaitiaki O Ngā Taonga Whitiāhua.
