by Galerie Urs Meile Location: Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin, Germany
Artist(s): AI Wei Wei
Date: 3 Apr - 7 Jul 2014
Ai Weiwei’s largest solo exhibition yet will open in Berlin’s Martin-Gropius-Bau. On 3,000 square metres in 18 rooms and the Lichthof he will be displaying works and installations which were either designed for the Martin-Gropius-Bau or have not yet been shown in Germany. The name Ai Weiwei has given to his exhibition is “Evidence”, a term well known beyond the English-speaking world from American TV crime series in the meaning of proof that will stand up in court. It is a political exhibition that Ai Weiwei has designed for Berlin.
For the Lichthof Ai Weiwei specially designed a new installation: Stools, 2014 consists of over 6000 wooden stools that were collected from villages in Northern China. Despite their difference in age – some are dated from the Ming and Qing Dynasty, others were made during the time of the Republic of China – they look alike; the shape of this basic Chinese household fixture hasn’t changed much over hundreds of years.
