Works on Paper, presents a rich mix of drawings, paintings, collage, print and photography, all of which have been drawn, painted or printed on paper. They range from the very large to the small, exploiting a wide range of media, including acrylic, watercolour, ink, pencil, photography and even wax.
Perhaps due to the adaptability or the inherently humble everyday qualities of paper, many of the works show an immediacy and deftness of touch often lost in more complex 'finished' paintings or sculptures. Paper provides a space wherein (and whereon) artists can work through their thoughts and ideas - or simply play, or dream. No other medium is so democratic, so malleable or so adept at containing (and keeping) the charge that ignites in the eye and mind, instantly flowing through the arm and fingers and onto a surface. Speed is often the essence, magically giving life to a personal voice. Even the quickest or lightest of marks can be imbued with the personality of the artist, as if the artist's very DNA is contained within them; they erupt onto and across the paper with a dexterity seldom found elsewhere, facilitated by the medium of paper. The barriers are down allowing us unfettered access to the artist.
Folded or rolled, bound or loose in a book or portfolio, paper is portable and, not least, disposable too. Torn-up, shredded, rolled into a ball and tossed into a bin, the artist can choose whether to throw away or keep. Works on paper are often robust survivors, the workers at the front line as well as the documents and mouthpieces of creation.
Regardless of when and how they were made, standing before them we are engaged in a direct dialogue with the artist.
