Gonkar Gyatso was born in Lhasa in 1961; he studied Fine Art in Beijing and in London (UK). He is founder of the Sweet Tea House (London), the first gallery in Europe devoted to showcasing contemporary Tibetan art. Currently based in London, he was the recipient of a Leverhulme fellowship in 2003 and became ‘Artist in Residence’ at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. His work has been internationally exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe and Northern America. Gonkar Gyatso’s work charts the subtle shifts in identity and belonging, caused by constant migration. Through diasporic experiences, he traverses the hybridity of resettlement fusing different cultures and traditions.
