RE: Assemble
by YOD Gallery
Location: Yod Gallery
Artist(s): Motonori UWASU
Date: 1 Mar - 26 Mar 2011

Uwasu, who graduated from the painting course in the Osaka University of Arts, has always executed realism paintings in the theme of landscapes. His paintings in the scenes that have been cut off from actual townscapes or landscapes are expressed in a different way from normal landscapes in terms of technique and concept. He does not paint only in realism, but also is consist in unifying different parts from other subjects or replacing into one colour in his paintings. The way of seeing reality is based on the general idea that substantial shapes are essential, but is individually differed each other by consciousness and discerning. He points that idea and emphasises universality of feeling things by bringing unaware colours, diversity to the perception of shape, and intensity of recognising details into relief in his expression.

Uwasu has even developed his idea in this exhibition since he had his solo exhibition in 2 years ago. He left identifiable elements in his landscapes, but they have gone in the new series of his landscapes. He consciously emphasised on intrinsic and local qualities by depicting signboards or landmark buildings in the city, but deliberately erases these essences to make universality penetrated more deeply into the theme. The subject in the new series is expressed in reassembling lots of details from other subjects. He pursues images of demolition and re-construction in his execution in order to present the value transcending time and space or the existence of universal value that people could share.

The title of the exhibition, "RE: Assemble" also means that Uwasu creates contrary composition in the act of reassembling reality. All the opposing ideas, such as past and present, you and me, and universal and particular, are conceptualised when we accept the reality with feedback on them. By raising a question in the contrast, he brings viewers’ attention to unaware subjects and continues to pursue universality in the repetition of demolition and re-assembling in his representation.
