Untitled/ Again (Marienbad/ Singapore)
by Osage Singapore
Location: Osage Singapore
Date: 31 Jan - 31 Jan 2009

Time: 4 - 6 pm

Untitled/Again (Marienbad/Singapore) is a performance-installation inspired by seriality,  black swans and Alain Robert-Grillet and Alain Resnais' cold classic Last Year at Marienbad. This seminal piece of modern cinema is legendary for its self-contained yet ambiguous narrative structure in which memory and mores are subject to doubt, and events, locations and personas remain repetitive yet mutable and oblique. Artist Yason Banal forms a contemporary constellation around etiquette, desire and stupor by transporting Marienbad to different cities, inhabited by human figurines, sculptural garments and gallery artifacts. Exploring haute bourgeois codes as arthouse cinema, realist portraiture, exotic cuisine, high literature and classical music, the well-composed tableaux vivant's durational and repetitive acts of remembrance and representation begin to implode against/into spectral documents and suppressed associations.

The serial has been exhibited and performed at Osage Gallery Hong Kong and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and will continue to Osage Gallery Singapore (January), Jakarta Biennale (February), IFA Stuttgart and Berlin (April and August)  and Courtauld Institute in London (May). The work-in-progress will result in a boxed edition set of garments, sculptures, text, still and moving images.
