Oil on canvas
The canvases are covered in folk motifs and dense imagery. Images from dreams, mythologies, even Buddhist subjects collide and fuse in these inter-twining tales. Liang ChengSheng is a regarded artist who received his early training in art from the Beijing Professional Art School in 1983. He later went on to study decorative design. His art combines his early fascination with folk art forms such as paper cuts with a more contemporary sensibility. His artworks, line drawings, papercuts and paintings, unfailingly bring to fore traditional themes and images that inspire and inform his works.
From his early papercuts to his later paintings, Liang’s compositions remain fundamentally similar. They are centered on figures and these are fully integrated with his diverse imagery that draws primarily on his familiarity with folk art but is also enriched by his stint with design.
At Mulan Gallery, Liang’s recent works of paintings can be seen. The formats are fairly large but the motifs and the themes of his earlier practice persist on the canvases. The palette of colours is rich and this enriches the multiple layers woven into each story he tells.
