by Instinc
Location: INSTINC Soho & Studios
Artist(s): YEO Shih Yun, Katja PAL, CHAN Mei Hsien, Paul CAMPBELL
Date: 11 Jan - 18 Jan 2011

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” Walt Disney

To kick start the new year, INSTINC is pleased to present FORE, a group exhibition by four artists featuring works by Paul Campbell(New York), Katja Pal(Slovenia), Mei Hsien Chan(Singapore) and Shih Yun Yeo(Singapore). This exhibition gathers four artists with diverse styles, yet with one common ground, all are committed to the painting and drawing as a medium in their artistic practice. Visitors to INSTINC in both locations, Clarke Quay and Wcega Tower in the New Year are set to be amazed by this exhibition, featuring more than thirty works in total.

PAUL CAMPBELL(http://www.paulcampbellstudio.com)
Paul Campbell received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art. He has had solo exhibitions in New York City, Brooklyn, Toronto, Santa Fe, and Barcelona. He has also exhibited at the Rose Art Museum, the Danforth Art Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Campbell has also participated in several international exhibitions. He received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2003. Paul Campbell lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Over the years, Campbell has developed surprisingly innovative painterly systems and sophisticated mark-making techniques that make randomness and chance collide with directness and seriality. Campbell's works simultaneously suggest a parody and homage to Abstract Expressionist and Asian Calligraphic works of the past.

KATJA PAL(http://www.katjapal.com)
Katja Pál is a Slovene painter, she completed her MFA(Painting) from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2010. Through its flexible structure the individual painting calls for an active, close dialogue. The beholder possesses an option to touch or simple to “play with” the exposed works. The works exhibited are movable and audiences can interact with the paintings.

MEI HSIEN CHAN(http://mhchan83.wordpress.com)
Mei Hsien is a visual artist, living and working in Singapore. Born in 1983, she graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2004. Drawing has always been an integral part of her art practice and her fascination with lines started when she discovered the collagraph technique from printmaking. With that technique, she has been exploring portraiture in her drawings. Her inspirations come from her habitual observations of daily events and people around her. Working with a wide range of images culled from periodicals to web images, her subjects range from politicians, celebrities, to the anonymous man on the street.

SHIH YUN YEO(www.shihyunyeo.com)
Influenced by Abstract Expressionists, Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline, she is known for her strong energetic use of black ink and a passionate obsession with capturing the elusive moment that exists between chaos and order. Shih Yun has exhibited at numerous leading galleries in Singapore and Europe. Her recent exhibitions include her film screening at stiftelsen3,14 gallery, Norway, 'Hello World', Ito Folk Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan. Collections includes Aspen Re Collection, Singapore, The Four Seasons Hotel, Hangzhou at Westlake,China, Marina@Keppel Bay and arts patron, Mr Koh Seow Chuan.
