by Instinc
Location: Instinc
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 20 Dec - 29 Dec 2013

INSTINC presents an exhibition entitled [Islands] curated by Takumi Kato, a Japanese artist based in Nara city. Takumi invited artists based in Singapore to collaborate through a group show for one month as INSTINC’s AIR programme in Singapore. In this show, Takumi aims to explore how we can re-discover the land we stand on, as he interferes with other's works using his neutral one. The pieces of art are scattered in an archipelago form, through the beautiful building [The Lorong 24A Shophouse Series No.13].

About the artists:

Takumi Kato (Japan) is a painter and sculptor based in Nara City, Japan. Takumi paints gathered information into abstract and universal shapes by using simple acts. Takumi has exhibited his works in Japan, China, UK and Greece. Last year, He was invited to the huge international event [World Event Young Artists 2012] held in Nottingham, UK. In his recent works, he explores how we can share ideas on empty space.

Ezekiel Wong Kel Win (Singapore) is a Singapore contemporary artist. He received his Diploma in Fine Arts from Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore in 2010. Wong works in fine arts media— such as painting, printmaking and drawing—as well as what is conventionally considered commercial media—digital drawings—and is known for his sardonic wit and humour. Wong is a member of the Singapore Printmaking Society and has exhibited in Singapore and abroad including shows at Pocket Films Festival in Japan 2007, Singapore Printmaking Society 29th Annual Exhibition, and Sabanci University, Turkey.

Khairullah Rahim (Singapore) graduated with a Bachelor of Fine arts (Painting, with a First Class Honours) from LASALLE College of the Arts, in partnership with Goldsmiths, College of London in 2013. Khairullah was also a receipient of the Future Leadership Scholarship (Full) from the college. He has participated actively in various exhibitions both in and outside of the college such as "No Approval" (Grey Projects, 2013), Cross Encounters (JCC, Embassy of Japan, 2013) and ASIA CONTEMPORARY ART SHOW (Hong Kong, 2013) to name a few. In addition, his works has also been showcased in numerous exhibitions and art fairs abroad; Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, USA, and Japan. Up to date, his paintings are in numerous private and corporate collections.

Michy Witchy (Michelle Lim, Singapore) believes that nothing beats the experiences that are more genuine than personal history and the people connected with it. She finds the need to appreciate and maintain moments with life as records for keepsake and captures her memories typically in pen and ink. Michelle's work has been exhibited in group shows in Singapore, UK and Jordan. Her most recent collaboration with artist Juan Manuel Ruetalo, Larga Distancia, was shown at SUBTE gallery in Montevideo, Uruguay.   Since July 2013, Michelle has been actively working on side projects under Mi Casa Su Casa, an independent alternative art space in Singapore, on top of her day jobs.

Ruyi Wong (Singapore) completed her BFA (hons) from Nanyang Technological University the School of Art, Design and Media, Singapore. Ruyi received her MA (Fine Art) in Camberwell College of Art, University of the Art London, UK. Ruyi has exhibited internationally in the UK, Singapore, South Korea and Australia.Wong’s practice ties in very closely to the material, to reinforce the content with different use of materials. The contact with the materiality of things allows a different kind of conversation to happen in the encounter. Wong explores into ontology, connecting her desire to make an allusion to the unpresentable by means by visible presentations. Wong believes that the propensity towards the marvelous can never be thoroughly extirpated from human nature. Within this context Wong explores the relationship of the photographic image to the inner and the exterior world. She doubles as an art writer and her writing has appeared in independent publications, exhibitions catalogs and print magazines.
