Slice
by Instinc
Location: Instinc
Artist(s): Lisa CHANDLER
Date: 28 Jun - 30 Jun 2013

INSTINC is proud to present “Slice” , an exhibition of recent paintings created at the end of a two months residency at INSTINC. Life in Lisa' home town of Nelson, population around 50,000, is a single level experience. In contrast, Singapore, population around 5 million, is a vertical city with urban spaces that stretch up and descend down. The tallest building is 70 levels, there are countless shopping malls, many with at least three basement levels and the deepest metro station is the equivalent of 15 stories underground. As a visitor, the unknown spaces and happenings on the street, in the shopping malls and in the subways offer stimulation, surprises and a sense of otherness. Lisa will be exploring the multi-layered nature of the environment on foot and taking photographs along the way. As she wanders around she will be engaging with the verticality of the spaces and the dynamics of the crowd by taking photographic 'slices' of city life. This urban wandering forms Lisa's image collection process. Then in the studio, Lisa layers multiple images using transparent glazes to shape, obliterate and reform figures and urban structures. The works highlight the tension between the crowd and the quiet of the individual. Her people become traces of themselves, beyond our grasp yet open to the many possibilities of anonymity. This exhibition will feature about 10 paintings on canvas.

About the Artist:

Lisa Chandler is an artist from New Zealand, currently on a two month artist residency in Singapore. Lisa graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts (hons) from Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design in 2012 and now works as a full-time artist from her studio in Ruby Bay, New Zealand. Her work has been recognised through awards and in 2012 Lisa presented her MFA paper at the Affective Landscapes Conference at the University of Derby, England.

Lisa’s paintings reflects an obsession with busy, transitional non-places explored through urban wandering. The non-place, as defined by French theorist Marc Auge, is a generic, anonymous and transitory space that has proliferated due to globalisation. Examples include airports, bus and train stations and city streets. Lisa uses the non-place as a metaphor for the underlying chaos and anonymity of our existence. Her objective is to provoke people to stop and think about how we are living, in cities and in our transient relationships. She is currently represented by galleries in New Zealand and her works are in held in private collections in New Zealand and overseas.
