Travelling Home
by Instinc
Location: Instinc
Artist(s): Freddie THOMAS
Date: 26 Apr - 28 Apr 2013

INSTINC is proud to present “Travelling Home”, an art exhibition showcasing artworks by UK artist, Freddie, under the theme of home. The universal notion of home is a common theme covered by many musicians, poets, writers, and film directors and will continue to be a source of curiosity for years to come. With rapidly advancing technology and globalization the notion of home is ever evolving and ever changing. Social media networks like facebook, messengers, tweeter, skype and with the world supposedly getting smaller due to better transport. The fundamental question, which arises, is “what is home?” and have the old notions of home become outdated and irrelevant in this modern world. This work endeavours to question the viewer’s notion of home. In a world where many worlds exist within one. And one where geographical boundaries no longer dictates the notion of home.

About the Artist:

Freddie was born in 1975, in Belvedere, London in the UK. She currently lives and works in Singapore. Since a young age Freddie has been fascinated and infatuated with Popular Culture. Whether for its glossy and shiny appeal, or for the affect that it has upon the world within which we live. Freddie technique involves appropriating images, and sayings from the Internet and television, then re-packages, re-sells, re-works and re-manipulates the image. The artist works through a variety of different genre whether painting, drawing, video installations, photography or performance art. As she does not like to limit herself to one method of working and creating.

Freddie believes that in today’s society pretty much anything and everything is part of popular culture, ranging from sport to knowledge. And this allows for endless possibilities within her works. Almost always a social narrative unfolds naturally within her work, which allows the viewer to view work from a new and engaging perspective. The work produced is usually that which is familiar to pop art with a modern abstract twist, edge and vibrancy. At present most of the work links neatly with the urban landscape as Freddie herself is a city girl. She has exhibited in the London, New York, Paris, Istanbul, Seoul, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Freddie has also worked as a teacher for 12 years in South East London and Kent state schools.
