Rethinking Chinese Ink: Persevering against the grain in the contemporary art market
by Instinc
Location: Instinc
Artist(s): YEO Shih Yun, Quek Kiat SING, Chai Hoo OH
Date: 15 Nov - 18 Nov 2012

INSTINC art space is proud to present three contemporary Singaporean Chinese ink painters at The Affordable Art Fair from 15 – 18 November 2012. Chinese ink painting has been somewhat lost in the hullabaloo of flamboyant and experimental works produced for an art market fixated on sensationalists works and speculations on the next big star.

Artists like Quek Kiat Sing, Oh Chai Hoo and Yeo Shih Yun who who choose to work with Chinese ink enjoy the potential and diversity of the medium and are inspired rather than shackledby its abundant history. They embrace the challenges that come with the nature of the medium — the exacting control of ink flow, the delicacy of the paper — and deftly update this well-established tradition with their unique contemporary styles.
