Legacy Series
by GJ Asian Art
Location: Galerie Joaquin Singapore
Artist(s): Angelito ANTONIO
Date: 12 Nov - 20 Nov 2010

Born in Malolos, Bulacan, Angelito Antonio (b.1939) is an expressionist modernist painter known for his strong cubist compositional forms using folk and rural motifs. Antonio is also a master teacher for generations of art student at the UST. The University of Santo Tomas (UST) has had a strong tradition of Filipino modernists. Antonio was awarded twenty times by the Philippines' top art award-giving bodies, such as the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP), Shell Student Art Competition and many others. Antonio also received the prestigious Araw ng Maynila Award from the City Government of Manila for his contribution to the arts in 1984.

The Legacy Series marks a historic exhibition for the 71 years old multi-awarded Pilipino painter, Angelito Antonio, who is regarded as the prime mover of action painting and a master of Modern Philippine Art. The artist is part of the figurative expressionist movement and his peers and colleagues include National Artist Ang Kiukok, Antonio Austria, Danilo Dalena, Mario Parial, Jaime De Guzman and Norma Belleza. In this exhibition, Antonio challenges himself to do away the strong primary and tertiary colors attempting to achieve the same effect with a controlled black and white palette highlighted by their various shades and hues. It is a masterly approach to develop his themes and subjects. It is in the studious perception of simple unities and spiritual values of disciplined practice that has defined his artistic identity. "Although Cubism and Expressionism are my approaches to this discipline, the Filipino way of life has been my constant and endless inspiration to achieve this end."

This is an exclusive project initiated by the Galerie Joaquin group featuring rare works which the artist would like to bequeath to the Filipino art public as part of his artistic legacy. It takes one and a half year for the project to come to fruition and Galerie Joaquin Singapore is pleased to showcase 8 compellingly captivating artworks by the much acclaimed master.
