Nowhere Near
by Fost Gallery
Location: Fost Gallery
Artist(s): CHUN Kai Feng
Date: 18 Jan - 24 Feb 2013

FOST Gallery is pleased to present Chun Kai Feng’s first major solo exhibition, Nowhere Near. The exhibition delves into the subject of temporality through commonplace things and comprises an installation of 11 new works, it is the outcome of Chun's exploration over the past three years in geometric abstraction and possibilities for sculpture to unfold and collapse the past, present and future.

Responding to the entrenchment of the nostalgic mode in cultural production and daily life in Singapore, Chun frames ideas of place in context of nostalgia, belonging, and the long-term relationship between people and things. A recurring method in his works is fabricating familiar things one finds in Housing Development Board estates with materials from spaces without claim to a sense of place, from shopping malls to Mass Rapid Transit interiors. Chun stages encounters with the past's futures through the things we find around us, asking what kind of aspiration there is in the midst of a bleak future today.

Nowhere Near represents Chun's experimentation with materials from laminate to stainless steel, and ways towards abstraction in sculpture. While the installation departs from his previous grey-scale sculptures of scenes frozen in time towards everyday things, the works are a development from his concern with concepts of boredom, stagnation and waiting.
