Tang Ling Nah’s charcoal drawings of architectural spaces reflect her continual examination and contemplation of Singapore’s transitory areas such as public housing void decks, alleys, corridors, underground passes and Mass Rapid Transit stations. In a city state, where almost every square inch is designated and efficiently redeveloped for a particular use, these areas are not considered real spaces, other than a route to reaching a destination. They are familiar to us yet overlooked and taken for granted.
Similarly, we are familiar with Tang’s chosen medium – drawing. Drawings are essentially mark-making on any support, and we often regard the process as exploratory and the finished works as studies to a painting, sculpture, video work etc.
Tang’s drawings provide an outlet for the audience to stop, rest, contemplate and be conscious of their relationship with the city’s spaces. This exhibition which will include her past and new works, are important documentation of the changes to Singapore’s urban landscape.
