Back To School - Something About Education But Not Exactly...
by Esplanade - Concourse
Location: Jendela (Visual Arts Space)
Artist(s): LEUNG Chi Wo
Date: 5 Jan - 23 Jan 2011

Something About Education But Not Exactly... is a brand new work commissoned for the M1 Singapore Fringe Festival 2011. It contemplates the meaning and value of education projected as stereotype in a highly capitalistic mass society. It allows the confrontation of mainstream and marginal values in the light of violence-free humour. The installation will feature images and texts produced to contemplate the essence of learning and the idea of communication through different senses and sign systems. The work features a pseudo-educational video entitled Signs made in 2008 that explores the idea of non-mainstream communication and the meaning of human reality overloaded by mass media – to be screened in a classroom setting for the installation.

About the artist:

Born in Hong Kong, Leung Chi Wo is one of the co-founders of Para/Site Art Space, and has received numerous awards including the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship (1997), Urban Council Award of the Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial (1997), and the first prize in sculpture from the Philippe Charriol Art Foundation (1995). He had also participated in the Venice Biennale (2001), Busan Biennale (2006), Guangzhou Triennial (2008), and has exhibited in various galleries around the world
