In collaboration with the Embassy of Mexico, NAFA is honoured to present a touring exhibition of 48 traditional Mexican masks from the Muyaes Ogazón Collection. Professor Estela Ogazón and anthropologist Jaled Muyaes had over the past 50 years acquired, classified and labelled over a thousand masks from different regions of Mexico. This selection showcases the dazzling variety of masks used in modern-day Mexican fiestas, not only to honour patron-saints but also to heighten the carnivalesque atmosphere. Through this collection of masks, one may witness the successful syncretism of paganism and Christianity in Mexican culture and celebrate the ingenuity and intricate handiwork of their makers.
