Born in Morocco in 1965, SAID OUARZAZ is a self-taught artist who practices an authentic and captivating art removed from academism. This art which finds itself at odds from the conventions of current artistic modes is close to primitive art, naïve art as well as other popular expressions of tribal or ethnic character. It allows the appearance of multiple and complex influences and is notably characterized by its minute details and the use of strong colours. Its enigmatic style surprises as
much as it fascinates, alternating between the abstract and the figurative.

It is an absolute richness of symbols, colours and hallucinations which is represented through his blows of paint brushes held with rage and determination. His ideas are traced directly on the canvas in an intense manner, with enthusiasm and vigour, without sketches or preparations. Nervous gestures and the strokes of colours swiftly applied bring us into a tumultuous world of intertwined
phantasmagoric animals which appears from the depths of his subconscious. Multiple and various figures are hidden and the eye can only capture them after a long observation. The brushes are agitated with virtuosity in a maelstrom of squeezed details which do not leave any free space. SAID OUARZAZ lives in the canvas. Finishing one single aspect of a work, his spirit is not at rest until he applies the last stroke to his painting. The flow of paint, over-applications of colours and turbulence are immediate signs of his painting techniques.

Moreover, the eyes dispersed everywhere on his canvas are of great importance in his work, their fundamental presence is a passage to the mystery and is also acts as a mirror which participates in the strangeness of his paintings. They are magical and function as amulets: the protecting eye! SAID OUARZAZ initiates us into a new world. He gives life to past civilizations and opens a way to the future. He is a visionary as well as a guide.
