Lives and works in San Francisco
Since his evocative photographs shown at the 2006 California Biennial organised by the Orange County Museum of Art, Sullivan has been exploring the self-critical tendency within modern art. The two most influential artists for Sullivan are Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol. From Duchamp’s Fountain to Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Can, groundbreaking ideas of Western modern art evolved from a critical attitude towards its own creativity.
Using himself as the subject of his artwork, Sullivan constantly questions fundamental concepts of Western art such as authorship, tromp-l’oeil and subjectivity. As an intricate visual reference of the nature of modern art, the work of Sullivan will provide an intriguing introduction to conceptual art and appropriation.
Sullivan has received numerous awards and fellowships including the prestigious San Francisco Foundation Murphy Fellowship and SF Goldie Award by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. His work has been exhibited throughout the USA and internationally in Ireland and Poland. Orange County Museum of Art, CA and Deutsch Bank NY have his works in their public collections.
