Ketna Patel's solo exhibition
by Indigo Blue Art
Location: Gallery Two
Artist(s): Ketna PATEL
Date: 2 Sep - 30 Sep 2010

For the first time, artists Vibha Galhotra and Ketna Patel will come together in a uniquely curated group exhibition, to present a series of seemingly diverse works that are devised to encourage an involved dialogue between viewer and artist.

Indigo Blue Art curates exhibitions which highlight the breadth and diversity of Indian art. Our collection covers various forms from naive folk and tribal art, high caliber works by the fabled masters and senior artists, to the talented work emerging in India today. We aim to provide a historical context whilst reflecting on important trends in Contemporary India Art.

And in our continuing passion to create a wider audience for India Art, we bring to you a diverse exhibition showcasing two artists who share the same passion but produce contrasting work. Our events provide a unique insight into the artist's world, serving to stimulate an exchange of ideas and allow for engagement with the work on many different levels.

Over at Gallery two, Ketna Patel - dubbed the "Andy Warhol of the East" - colourful works are a stark contrast to Vibha's visions of devastating beauty. Loud, rich with bold striking colours, Ketna's compositions are derived from complex narrative that questions the effects of modernity on time, space, communication and traditional culture.

Born in Uganda of Gujarati origin, educated in England and now based in Singapore, Ketna often draws on her rich experience of having lived in three different continents. Her works are a juxtaposition of images from a myriad of Asian popular cultures, and are designed to reflect the spirit of interaction amongst individuals, and how one's collective histories and commonalities are coming together in new ways.

This selection of works, which are in a variety of media, from photo collages, paintings and prints to furniture and other non-traditional forms, explores various themes, including the effects of the mass media on one's identity and culture. With lacerating irony, she draws attention to the ways in which the mass media and art shape collective and individual identities across different cultures.

Through her ongoing exploration of culture and identity, Ketna hopes to inspire and encourage her viewers to make a reappraisal of all received ideas. Her versatile and visually eye-catching works never fail to engage and facilitate a dialogue with the viewer, contributing to a powerful aesthetic and intellectual experience.
