The Black Frame Project: YourSingapore
by Indigo Blue Art
Location: Indigo Blue Art
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 5 Sep - 30 Sep 2013

The Black Frame Project is the first of a series of exhibitions that features an array of artworks by a group of artists of different calibres, fortes, and artistic orientations. Each commissioned work is produced in a standard-sized canvas and displayed in an empty, floating black frame – the collection of works are then randomly organised together within a disciplined grid structure. A display that pushes the boundaries of conventional exhibits, this installation presents a panoramic view of a variety of creative interpretations of a subject, rewarding the audience with an unadulterated viewing experience replete with intellectual stimulation.

The Black Frame Project: YourSingapore showcases a curated assortment of artwork from a group of local and Indian artists ranging in style, form and expression, bounded only by subject and scale. The exhibition presents an insight into the collective perspectives of Singapore, mainly disparate opinions by two distinct groups of artists; local residents who have lived and worked here, and others whose superficial interpretations are based on second-hand knowledge and brief sojourns. Consisting of over fifty contrasting artistic interpretations and colourful expressions ranging from oil to ceramics on canvas, photography to painting and abstract to representational art, this project attempts to address the cost of the achievements of a nation that prides itself on cleanliness, efficiency, discipline, safety, and more.

In conjunction with this exhibition, Indigo Blue Art is organising a forum, Singapore: An Artist’s Impression, in which local artists discuss their artwork and exchange ideas, concept and stories that contribute to their works. More than just an art discourse and a chance for visitors to meet the artists, this dialogue between artists and visitors would serve as an invigorating platform to share different perspectives and notions about what defines Singapore. This event will be held on 14 September and is part of the Singapore Grand Prix Season organised by the Singapore Tourism Board.

Apart from the opportunity for visitors to acquire brand new commissioned works, a catalogue featuring information on the artists and their artworks, as well as a specially commissioned essay by writer, sociologist and former associate professor from the National University of Singapore, Dr Nirmala Purushotam, will be on sale at the exhibition.
