Francis Newton SOUZA biography | artworks | events

Born in Goa, Francis Newton Souza joined the JJ School of Art, Bombay but was soon expelled for organising a strike. He was a founder member of the Progressive Artists Group which held its first exhibition in Bombay, 1948. Soon after he left for London where he supported himself through journalism. His articles appeared in many prestigious magazines and his autobiography Words and Lines was published in 1959. He had his first successful solo show at Gallery One , London in 1961and has since contributed in numerous exhibitions worldwide including the MoMA, Oxford(1982), Royal Academy of Arts, London (1982), Hirschhorn Museum, Washington D.C. (1982) and Halle de l’lle, Geneva (1986). Souza died in 2002.
