It’s a Small World!
by HaKaren Art Gallery
Location: HaKaren Art Gallery
Date: 3 Dec - 10 Dec 2008

HaKaren Art Gallery is proud to present It’s a Small World!, a group exhibition featuring a specially assembled collection of reasonably priced and miniature works by various Chinese artists. The event will be held at its gallery from 3 – 10 December 2008.

This exhibition is organised in sync with the jubilee season of Christmas, showcasing small, exquisite and affordable paintings and sculptures of various mediums, styles and expressions, with prices ranging approximating between S$700 and S$8,000.

AFFORDABLE QUALITY ART AMID BAD TIMES

As the world experiences one of its largest financial crises ever, it seems that this Christmas is going to be a gloomy one, with many people removing expensive gifts from their shopping list and cutting down on extravagant spending.

But, who says presents that delight and are meaningful must be big and costly? HaKaren Art Gallery, for example, believes that even with a small budget, one can still afford quality Chinese art.

To be able to rejoice in the jubilee Christmas spirit despite receiving disheartening news every other day, HaKaren is presenting It’s a Small World! group exhibition, which is a specially assembled collection of reasonably priced and miniature artworks by various outstanding modern and contemporary Chinese artists.

In fact, the inspiration behind this art exhibition is to create a lighthearted ‘small world’ that can bring a smile and lift the spirits of art lovers amid the current economic situation. One will not fail to notice the artists’ ingenious reinvention of joy with their artistic concepts as well as splashes of brilliance and beauty in their creative presentations.

Most importantly, these exhibits are not only small and exquisite, but within budget too. “Perhaps we cannot indulge in blue-chip artists, but who says you cannot buy other quality art and celebrate a good Christmas in bad times?” asked Mr. Derek Tse, Director of HaKaren Art Gallery.

Indeed, one can truly expect oneself to rediscover a world of happiness and beauty through the artists’ excellent creations as well as enjoy a jovial and unique experience when viewing the artworks at the premises of HaKaren in Tanglin Shopping Centre from 3 to 10 December.

Besides this central theme, another similar characteristic is the artists’ splendid application of bright and vivid hues to their artworks, in contrasting to the depressing mood around the world, allowing one to indulge in the usual joyful colours of a festive season.

“We sincerely hope to celebrate a warm Christmas with all art lovers [despite the crisis] in this dainty art world that we have specially created,” added Derek.

Among the exhibiting Chinese artists are Gu Yan, a strong advocator for oil paintings; Hu Yong Kai, master of feminine beauteousness and ravishing portraitures; Pan Gang, who chooses to recompose the beauty in life onto his water colour paintings; and Xue Dai, who delicately captured the essence and gracefulness of Indian dance with her brushstrokes.

Other selected young artists also include Qiu Qijing, a promising sculptor who believes that in order to enjoy beauty and vigour during youth times, one must first understand its twin emotions of restlessness and pain; Shen Jing Dong, who is often recognized by his celebrated way of painting Chinese soldiers in a pop art manner; Shen Shu Bin, an inventive presenter of a revolutionary scarlet era where James Dean and Mao Zedong belong; and Wang Qijun, who attempts to revisit the ancient Qin Dynasty of China with his whimsical troop of terracotta sculptures.

“With so many interesting artists and artworks, the only rule this Christmas is to celebrate [Christmas] in style and be prepared to receive a whale of mini surprises at HaKaren!” said Ms Katrina Soo, Manager of HaKaren.
