Lim Tiong Ghee is one of Singapores foremost Collage Abstractionist having clinched top prizes in the UOB Painting of the Year Competition in 1984 and 1988. He is a self-taught artist and he has refined his technique over the past 26 years.
Growing up in a shophouse in Chinatown, Singapore, has given Tiong Ghee many opportunities to observe the enigmatic Bohdi tree across his street. Mostly the tree gave a sense of tranquillity, but at times it is carefree, joyful and also melancholy. The mixture of emotions experienced inspired Tiong Ghee to develop his recent series of work capturing the various movements of the leaves of the Bohdi Tree. Through different colours, concepts and perspectives one is able to experience the emotions of the artist in his artworks.
Tiong Ghee has taken abstract collage into its most poetical and sublime usage. Pared down to the simplest essentials of colour, line and texture, Tiong Ghees works are evocative of the classical Chinese painting style, where each stroke is meaningful.
His works can be found in both private and public collections, including the Four Seasons Hotel and Singapores National Art Museum Gallery.
