Li Dezhuang, a Singaporean artist who is currently based in Shanghai, won the United Overseas Bank (UOB) Painting of the Year (Chinese Painting Category) runner-up Award in 1984. Since then, he has held more than 10 solo exhibitions and 20 group shows with several international group exhibitions in different countries including London, Paris and New York City.
He is a staunch advocate of the contemporary art of Chinese ink painting (New ink art) for more than two decades. Li Dezhuang travels extensively in his search for appropriate approaches to incorporate western abstraction styles into the Chinese ink art form. His works are characterised by elements of swiftness of thought and execution, economy of language and eloquence of expression.
In 2004, he published a book, My Journey, which traces his 30 years of artistic career and experiences. The book covers his earlier works of seascapes, cityscapes and landscapes to his abstract ink works including a series of paintings from the period of 2000-2002.
Li Dezhuang continues to innovate and push the boundaries of the Chinese ink art form. His thought-provoking fusion of Chinese ink art with western art abstraction is an inspiration to many.
