Tales of Tomorrow
by Taksu Singapore
Location: Taksu Singapore
Artist(s): Joe FLEMING, Celia NEUBAUER
Date: 3 May - 19 May 2012

Comprising of paintings that are not quite figurative and not quite abstract, Tales of Tomorrow is populated with floating shapes, curving planes and layered surfaces. Each work appears to be in a temporary state, held together in an elastic equilibrium, in which at any moment everything could change. For Celia and Joe, the act of painting provides the opportunity to constantly reframe what painting is: something always shifting, referencing its own subjective past, only to expand out to a new tomorrow and begin anew.

Joe Fleming (b. 1964 Canada) has been exhibiting internationally for over 15 years. His painterly process involves aggressively distressing surfaces (mostly wood panel and plexi glass) then rebuilding them with flat graphic devices and brightly colored enamel hues. Fleming completed his formal education from Sheridan College of Applied Arts in 1986. He has lectured at various universities in Canada and South East Asia since 1993. His works are in the collections of Trimark Mutual Funds, Honeywell Bull, American Barrick, Princewaterhouse Coopers (Malaysia), HSBC Bank, Australian High Commission, Canadian High Commission (Kuala Lumpur), the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Museum of Civilization (Hull, Quebec) and the Holocaust Museum (LA). Fleming has participated in many international art fairs: Rogue Wave Singapore, courtesy of Gallery Taksu as well as FIAC in Paris, Arte Cologne in Germany, Scope in New York and TIAF in Toronto all courtesy of Artcore. In 2009 Fleming’s work was included in Carte Blanche 2: Painting – a survey of new Canadian painting and in May 2012 Fleming will be included in the 60 Painters exhibition in Canada. Joe Fleming was the Resident Artist of TARP KL in 2008. Joe Fleming lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Celia Neubauer (b. 1962 Canada) explores the ephemeral beauty and fleeting passage of the serendipitous image in her paintings. Celia Neubauer received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University in 1986, and Higher Diploma in 1990 from the Slade School of Fine Art in London, England. Neubauer has taught at the University of Toronto's School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, the University of Guelph, and as a sessional instructor of painting and drawing at Queen's University in Kingston. Since 1986 to date, Celia has mounted 14 solo exhibitions in various venues in Canada; and various group exhibitions internationally. Her works are in the collection of BMO Financial Group, Donovan Collection, Four Seasons, Hewlett-Packard Canada Ltd, Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Board, Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington, Toronto, and Trump Towers, Miami. Celia Neubauer lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
