It took all of 62 summers for KY Huang to return to his first love- art. The upcoming exhibition fittingly titled “Catching Up” is KY Huang’s valiant attempt at making up for lost time.
Held at 7Adam’s historic intimate colonial black and black house, this is symbolic as it coincides with the debut of his Singapore Series. In light of the nation’s 49th Birthday, this series tells the story of Singapore’s development post colonisation, the era which KY Huang grew up in. He opts for a classic contemporary approach as he hopes future generations can identify with his work, remember Singapore’s humble beginnings and appreciate what it is today.
Starting as a sculptor in 2007, he today alternates between painting and sculpting. While it is rare for an artiste to excel in more than one medium, KY Huang believes this serves as a good breather, allowing him to find fresh perspectives. He takes creative references from memorable life experiences, and God’s words and handicraft (nature and the human community).
The epiphany to create art only came after retirement despite KY Huang always having had an affinity with art. Discovering his flair at a young age, he could sketch and draw with an ease that was natural to him. Upon finishing his education, KY Huang chose to take on the safer route, joining the corporate world and art took a back seat.
Aware that he has much to catch up on, KY Huang is dedicated to creating grand and beautiful pieces of art in the hopes that his audience would take away the very same things that art has given him - inspiration, earnest joy and a smile.
The exhibition “Catching Up” will take audiences through an intimate and revealing journey of KY Huang’s steadfast growth as an artist since the start of his career in 2011. Comprising 30 sculptures and 30 paintings, it will feature a specially curated selection of his finest works, from his first series “Having Fun” to his latest “Singapore series” that will debut at this exhibition.
