The series of Chronic Circumstance reveals a world, which is unconsciously created in everyday life through collections of various objects. Landscapes of various objects such as plants and pots, porcelains, Matryoshka dolls, insects and birds have appeared often in Youngseok Cha's series of drawings where he depicts collections of diverse items that people gather for many reasons, their health, decoration, souvenirs and memoirs from travels and so on.

There is a certain awkwardness, peculiarity, and ridiculousness caused by the congregation of mutually unrelated objects. There is almost no intention to connect the objects with one another; there is to say, emphasis was placed upon the peculiarity of the scene of diverse, unrelated objects scattered in a single venue.

Youngseok Cha explores a habitual world, unrecognized but repetitive, that also belongs to the artist as an art practice which never be specially perceived however continued.

Ultimately the more he draws Chronic Circumstance, the more he erases the specific tastes of individuals concerning the objects being exposed, and the taste of society or the era that influences them, leaving only the artist's habitual tastes, which pursue patterns and minuteness.

Youngseok Cha was born in 1976 and currently works and lives in Seoul, South Korea. As one of the most prospected emerging artists in Korea, Cha's work has been exhibited numerous galleries as well as museums such as Keumho Museum of Art, SOMA museum of Art and National Museum of Contemporary Art. He also has received awards and grants for emerging artists by the Arts Council in Korea.
